The covered stretcher frames in our assortment are handmade in Germany. For the frames we use only professionally dried wood with a very low residual moisture. These are covered with selected canvases made of cotton and linen as well as stapled on the back. The entire manufacturing process is ISO 9001 TÜV certified, which ensures a consistently high quality. Our covered stretcher frames are suitable for all common types of paint such as acrylic, tempera, oil and also mixed colors.

The stretcher frames in the Canvasi range are made of sturdy spruce wood. It is relatively light, but still strong enough for the tension of a canvas. Thanks to slow drying and multiple gluing, we achieve the highest possible freedom from warping, which is guaranteed even with slight fluctuations in humidity.

Our covered stretcher frames are available in three different lath thicknesses. The standard version consists of 18 mm thick wood. It is particularly suitable if you want to hang your finished picture in an attractive shadow gap frame. If this is not desired, it is best to opt for our XXL variant with 40 mm thickness - also known as gallery stretcher frame.

Also interesting are our study stretcher frames with 17 mm depth, available in 30 fixed sizes. For beginners in canvas painting, our inexpensive covered stretcher frames made of high quality beech are recommended - of course also made in Germany.

Canvas qualities in the assortment of Canvasi

Before the picture is put on the canvas, it must first be stretched on the stretcher frame. This is done by hand at Canvasi and ensures a particularly careful treatment of the artist's surface. We offer our canvases in different qualities:

These differ mainly in the different proportions of cotton, linen and polyester. While the Basic Cotton canvases are made of 75% cotton and 25% polyester, the Premium Cotton models combine 40% linen and 60% cotton.For special techniques and color projects, we also offer stretched canvases in colors like blue, green or black. If you prefer a natural look, a natural canvas without primer is recommended. The Nature Linen and Nature Cotton canvases have an original coloring that may still show through in the finished artwork.

Most canvases for painting in our range can be used with a variety of colors. Whether acrylic, oil or tempera - the choice is yours. If you would like to paint particularly high-quality oil paintings, our covered stretcher frames with special oil linen are ideal. These have an oil-based, double-applied primer to optimally support the drying behavior of the colors.

Production of covered stretcher frames - by hand

Special care is required in the production of covered stretcher frames. In addition to well-dried woods and high-quality processed canvases, the construction itself must also be flawlessly crafted.

Basically, each stretcher frame consists of four strips, the ends of which are provided with slots and tenons. These are merely stuck together, but not glued or nailed. To further increase - or, if necessary, decrease - the tension, up to eight wedges can be inserted into the corner joints. However, this should be done only after the canvas has been mounted and primed.

To prevent the stretcher from being pushed through during painting, the outer edges are profiled in a semicircle. This creates a small gap between the canvas and the frame. We supply particularly large stretched canvas stretchers with a stabilizing construction, which can consist of an intermediate piece or a four, double or single cross, for example.
